Are you or someone you love considering a marijuana detox? At Guardian Recovery we understand how difficult it is to quit using marijuana after you’ve habitually used it for a period of time. The symptoms of marijuana withdrawal — the discomfort, irritability, mood swings, cravings, depression and insomnia — can make it feel impossible to quit. The key to overcoming this obstacle is a medically supervised detox where withdrawal symptoms can be eased with medication in a comfortable, supportive, homestyle environment. Beyond physical stabilization, detox is also an important time to plan a path forward free from marijuana. At Guardian Recovery we first provide a safe, pain-free detox, then we get to work putting together a plan for long-term sobriety. We perform an in-depth initial evaluation and tailor a treatment plan unique to each client’s needs and recovery goals. We begin therapy and offer holistic treatments like acupuncture, meditation and yoga. We ensure every client leaves with a firm foundation on which to build their ongoing recovery.

About Marijuana

Marijuana is a popular chemical substance, one that can be used medically or recreationally. While this specific drug has been legalized in many states, it can still lead to physical and psychological dependence — which requires a multi-phased continuum of clinical care, beginning with medically monitored detox. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, marijuana is the most commonly abused psychotropic drug in the U.S. In 2018 it was reported that close to 11.8 million young Americans used marijuana at least once over the course of the past year. Rates of marijuana use and dependence have been on the rise throughout the country, and medical emergencies directly linked to marijuana have also increased. The Drug Abuse Warning Network estimated that in the year 2011 there were roughly 456,000 emergency room visits directly linked to marijuana. The increase in medical emergencies is linked to increased potency. Marijuana is now more potent (and therefore more addictive) than it ever was previously.

There is a common and long-standing misconception surrounding marijuana use. Many mistakenly believe that because the drug is naturally derived and widely legal, it cannot lead to serious consequences or to physical or psychological dependence. The truth is that marijuana is addictive, and that medical detox is often necessary to alleviate the more severe symptoms of withdrawal. At Guardian Recovery we have extensive experience treating men and women of all ages who struggle with marijuana use disorder.

Marijuana Use Disorder
Signs & Symptoms

The symptoms associated with a diagnosable marijuana use disorder include:

  • Continuing to use marijuana for a longer period of time than anticipated and in greater amounts than intended
  • Wanting to cut back on the amount of marijuana being used but being unable to do so for any significant length of time
  • Experiencing personal consequences directly linked to marijuana use
  • A lack of motivation to participate in social events and recreational activities that were previously enjoyed
  • A lack of motivation to take care of personal responsibilities, which often leads to decreased performance at work, school or at home
  • The building of a physical tolerance, meaning a greater amount of marijuana is required in order for the same effects to be produced
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when marijuana use is suddenly stopped

Marijuana Withdrawal
Signs & Symptoms

The physical symptoms associated with marijuana withdrawal are never life-threatening. The main reason why medically monitored detox is essential is to help alleviate the psychological symptoms of withdrawal while preventing early relapse. Men and women who quit marijuana report the following symptoms:

  • Disrupted sleep patterns/an inability to fall and stay asleep
  • Irritability and agitation
  • Restlessness
  • General feelings of physical discomfort
  • Decreased appetite
  • Intense and overwhelming marijuana cravings
  • Depressed mood

The symptoms associated with marijuana withdrawal generally peak at around three days after the last use and last for up to two weeks. There are several factors that impact the severity of these symptoms, including the amount of marijuana that was being smoked on a daily basis, whether or not the individual was regularly using any other chemical substances and how potent the marijuana was.

Is Marijuana Detox Necessary?

While the physical symptoms associated with marijuana withdrawal are not generally life-threatening and rarely lead to serious health-related complications, the psychological symptoms can be severe. Because depression and anxiety are so common among men and women who are detoxing from marijuana, entering into a medically monitored, marijuana detox center is always a good idea. Medical detox is often a necessary stage of every long-term program of recovery for the following reasons:

  • Physical and psychological symptoms of marijuana withdrawal are uncomfortable, but they can be treated and effectively alleviated in a medical detox facility
  • In many instances marijuana is combined with other chemical substances, meaning that the symptoms of withdrawal can be unpredictable
  • Medical detox centers like Guardian Recovery offer rehab transitional services, ensuring that clients make a seamless transition into the next appropriate level of clinical care
  • It is important that men and women who have been suffering at the hands of a marijuana use disorder know that they are not alone
  • We offer family-oriented services including family therapy and family workshops so that the loved ones of our clients can begin the healing process as well

Treatment Options for Marijuana Detox

The physical symptoms associated with marijuana withdrawal are easily managed with the right combination of medications and around-the-clock medical supervision. At Guardian Recovery we utilize over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen in order to effectively treat general aches and pains, low-grade fever and other symptoms of physical discomfort. We treat insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns with non-addictive sleep aids, while actively teaching our clients numerous coping mechanisms that are geared towards helping them calm their minds and fall asleep naturally. Because many men and women who suffer from marijuana use disorder began using the drug to self-medicate an underlying mental health condition, we also offer comprehensive psychiatric services as part of our dual diagnosis program. In some cases a client is prescribed an antidepressant in order to combat the feelings of malaise and disillusionment that often go hand-in-hand with early marijuana withdrawal. Of course, treatment options vary on a person-to-person basis. What works for one client might not work as well for another, which is why we focus on providing highly individualized detox options.
