Focused Treatment
Medically Assisted Meth Detox

Are you or someone you love considering a meth detox? At Guardian Recovery we understand how difficult meth detox can be. The symptoms make quitting hard even when someone desperately wants to. The key to overcoming this obstacle is a medically supervised detox where withdrawal symptoms can be eased with medication in a comfortable, supportive, homestyle environment. Beyond physical stabilization, detox is also an important time to plan a path forward in recovery. At Guardian Recovery we first provide a safe, pain-free detox, then we get to work putting together a plan for long-term sobriety. We perform an in-depth initial evaluation and tailor a treatment plan unique to each client’s needs and recovery goals. We begin therapy and offer holistic treatments like acupuncture, meditation and yoga. We encourage a continuum of care, which could include continuing past detox on to an inpatient residential, partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient program. We ensure every client leaves with a firm foundation on which to build their ongoing recovery.

Meth Facts

Methamphetamine is an illicit and highly habit-forming stimulant drug. This specific drug affects the central nervous system and can lead to physical and psychological dependence in only several uses. The US Drug Enforcement Administration has labeled methamphetamine a Schedule II chemical substance, meaning it has a significant potential for misuse. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 1.6 million Americans reported using methamphetamine at least once over the course of the past year. 774,000 men and women over the age of 18 reported using methamphetamine at least once over the course of the past month, and the average age of new users was 23 years old. The rates of methamphetamine abuse and dependence have been on the rise throughout the country. In the year 2016, an estimated 684,000 Americans suffered from a diagnosable methamphetamine abuse disorder. By 2017, this number had increased to 964,000.

If you or someone close to you has been struggling with a methamphetamine abuse disorder, Guardian Recovery is available to help. Our comprehensive and highly individualized medication assisted, meth detox program provides clients with a level of clinical care that cannot be found in any state-funded detox facility or traditional hospital setting. Meth Addiction
Signs & Stymptoms

Both the short and long-term effects of methamphetamine use can be severe. When taken in small doses, the drug can result in irregular heart beat, increased blood pressure, increased wakefulness and erratic behavior. The long-term effects of methamphetamine abuse are far-reaching and severe. In addition to developing a physical and psychological dependence, men and women who engage in chronic methamphetamine use often develop anxiety issues, mood swings, persistent confusion, disorientation, insomnia, paranoia, hallucinations and delusions. The drug often leads people to act erratically and engage in violent outbursts. If you or someone you love has been abusing methamphetamine, it is important to seek professional help sooner rather than later — when left untreated, methamphetamine abuse can result in a range of permanent and irreversible issues.

Symptoms of methamphetamine addiction include:

  • Taking larger amounts of methamphetamine than intended for a longer period of time than intended
  • Attempting to quit but being unable to do so
  • Experiencing serious consequences as a result of methamphetamine use, which could be legal, financial or interpersonal in nature
  • Neglecting personal responsibilities
  • Spending more time isolated from friends and family members
  • A lack of attention paid to personal hygiene
  • Dental decay, also known as “meth mouth”
  • An increase in erratic behaviors and sometimes violent outbursts
  • An increase in risk-taking behaviors
  • Engaging in drug-seeking behaviors (which could include engaging in illegal activities like theft in order to support the drug habit)
  • Developing a physical tolerance (often rapidly), meaning that more methamphetamine is required in order for the desired effects to be produced
  • Experiencing physical and psychological symptoms of withdrawal when use is suddenly stopped or when the drug becomes unavailable

Methamphetamine
Withdrawal Symptoms

The physical symptoms associated with methamphetamine withdrawal are not generally life-threatening, but the psychological symptoms can lead to significant issues like suicidal ideation and persistent panic attacks when left untreated. The initial symptoms occur in the first 24 hours after the final use, and might include:

  • Restlessness
  • Fatigue
  • Increased appetite
  • Irritability and agitation
  • Physical discomfort

Symptoms of withdrawal typically peak within the first 72 hours and can last for up to two full weeks depending on the severity of the substance abuse disorder. Later stage symptoms of withdrawal include:

  • Extreme agitation
  • Fatigue, coupled with an inability to fall asleep
  • Anxiety, which can lead to panic attacks when left untreated
  • Depression, which can lead to suicidal ideation when left untreated
  • Intense methamphetamine cravings
  • Psychosis, characterized by hallucinations, delusions and a feeling of detachment from reality

A medication-assisted, medical meth detox can help alleviate all of these withdrawal symptoms in a safe, comfortable and supportive environment.

Is Medical Meth Detox Necessary?

When it comes to methamphetamine abuse and addiction, medically monitored detox is a vital first step on the road to recovery. While the physical symptoms can be easily treated with a combination of non-narcotic, over-the-counter medications, the psychological symptoms can be severe unless thoroughly addressed. When a person attempts to quit meth cold-turkey in an at-home setting, he or she is at grave risk of relapsing before the detox process concludes. This is because methamphetamine leads to overwhelming drug cravings that cannot be easily shaken. At Guardian Recovery we effectively treat these cravings while also aiding clients in getting a jumpstart on recovery.

Here are some of the benefits of a medical meth detox:

  • Clients are closely monitored and cravings addressed to avoid relapse
  • We utilize medications to ensure client comfort and a pain-free withdrawal
  • We provide clients with psychiatric services and antipsychotic medications whenever necessary
  • We provide clients with a range of homestyle retreat amenities, including three home-cooked meals daily, 24-hour access to a snack bar, serene lounges and a supportive clinical staff
  • Clients get a deep introduction to the 12 steps of recovery
  • We offer aftercare planning services to help clients transition into the next appropriate level of clinical care
  • We introduce clients to holistic coping tools such as meditation, yoga and acupuncture

Meth Detox & Treatment Options

At Guardian Recovery we utilize a combination of evidence-based meth detox and treatment techniques to alleviate withdrawal and encourage recovery including:

  • Medication assisted treatment (MAT) – According to a study published by the US National Library of Medicine, a combination of naltrexone, modafinil and bupropion have proven effective in alleviating the more severe symptoms associated with methamphetamine withdrawal. (2) At Guardian Recovery we utilize several approved pharmaceuticals whenever necessary. In most cases, we combine over-the-counter pain relievers with non-narcotic sleep aids in order to reduce physical discomfort and sleeplessness.
  • Holistic Treatments – We combine MAT with holistic methodologies in order to provide the most comprehensive care available. The holistic treatment methods we employ include massage therapy, yoga therapy, acupuncture, physical therapy and mindfulness meditation. These approaches have been proven to facilitate mind-body healing while reducing psychological drug cravings.
  • Intensive Behavioral Therapy – Therapy is an important part of methamphetamine addiction recovery, and at Guardian Recovery we believe that therapy should be the backbone of every stage of the recovery process from start to finish. We offer individual therapy, group therapy and family therapy in order to encourage emotional and mental healing as well as physical stabilization.
