Focused Treatment Medically Assisted Valium Detox

Are you or a loved one considering a Valium detox? At Guardian Recovery we understand how difficult Valium withdrawal can be. The withdrawal symptoms make quitting hard even when someone desperately wants to stop. The key to overcoming this obstacle is a medically supervised detox where withdrawal symptoms can eased with medication in a comfortable, supportive, homestyle environment. Beyond physical stabilization, detox is also an important time to plan a path forward in recovery. At Guardian Recovery we first provide a safe, pain-free detox, then we get to work putting together a plan for long-term sobriety. We perform an in-depth initial evaluation and tailor a treatment plan unique to each client’s needs and recovery goals.

About Valium

Valium is the brand name of the drug diazepam, a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety-related disorders, seizures and symptoms associated with acute alcohol withdrawal. It is known for being longer-lasting than other medications in the same class and can be highly addictive quickly — a physical and psychological dependence can take hold after several days or weeks of repeated use. Individuals who use Valium — even as prescribed by a medical professional — can quickly develop a physical tolerance, and once this tolerance develops they will inevitably experience symptoms of withdrawal as soon as use is abruptly ceased.

Over the course of the past several decades, rates of Valium abuse and addiction have been on the rise throughout the U.S. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that rates of benzodiazepine use are high among members of every demographic, and that between 2015 and 2016 an estimated 30.5 million adults used benzodiazepines like Valium. Despite high rates of use, only 17.1 percent of men and women who used these medications misused them on a regular basis, and only 2 percent had diagnosable benzodiazepine use disorders. However, it is important to note that this abuse rate is only among men and women who obtained a written prescription from a medical professional. Many people who abuse drugs like Valium obtain them from a friend or relative. If you or someone close to you has been abusing Valium or any other benzodiazepine medication, Guardian Recovery is available to help.

Valium Addiction
Signs & Symptoms

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) outlines a set of diagnostic criteria used to diagnose substance abuse disorders. The DSM-5 also includes guidelines used for determining how severe a substance abuse disorder has become. If you or your loved one is afflicted with two or three symptoms, he or she is suffering from a mild Valium addiction. Four or five symptoms indicate a moderate substance abuse disorder, and six or more symptoms indicate a severe substance abuse disorder. Regardless of how severe a substance abuse disorder has become, Guardian Recovery is available to help.

Symptoms of Valium Dependency:

  • Taking more Valium than intended for a longer period of time than intended
  • Wanting to quit but being unable to
  • Spending a significant amount of time obtaining and using Valium
  • Failing to keep up with personal responsibilities and obligations
  • Experiencing cravings for Valium
  • Interpersonal problems (problems in relationships)
  • Giving up recreational and social activities
  • Using Valium habitually even if it results in an increase of risk-taking behaviors
  • Continuing to use Valium despite physical and psychological consequences
  • Developing a physical tolerance over time
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when use is stopped suddenly

Valium Withdrawal
Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms associated with benzodiazepine withdrawal are often dangerous – even life-threatening – when not adequately treated and closely monitored around the clock. The symptoms vary in severity depending on how much Valium was being used and the frequency of use, and include:

  • Profuse sweating
  • Muscle spasms
  • Body tremors
  • Irritability and other changes to temperament
  • Persistent headaches
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
  • Hypersensitivity to light and sound
  • Delirium
  • Visual and auditory hallucinations
  • Severe anxiety and panic attacks
  • Seizures

When it comes to medications like Valium, severe withdrawal symptoms like seizures are common – this is just one of many reasons why medical detox is necessary.

Is Medically Monitored Detox Necessary?

Medical detox is necessary for the following reasons:

  • Clients undergo a safe withdrawal, and related symptoms are closely monitored and effectively treated preventing any health-related complications
  • Medical detox is focused on client comfort and provides a pain-free experience
  • Medical detox offers rehab placement services to ensure a continuation of care
  • Clients who attend detox have significantly lower rates of relapse
  • Clients have access to a range of additional services that help them build a solid foundation for long-term sobriety

Treatment Options for Valium Withdrawal

The treatment options for Valium withdrawal vary on a case-by-case basis, but typically include:

  • Tapering – When a client is tapered off of a medication it simply means that the dosage is slowly reduced in order to prevent the system from going into shock. In most Valium detox cases the dose is reduced by 5mg once every week until the client no longer has any Valium in his or her system. This is part of the reason why it is so important that medical detox is followed up by the next appropriate level of care — in many cases tapering must continue when a client enters into an inpatient drug rehab.
  • Medication assisted treatment – In cases of severe Valium dependence a client is often prescribed an anti-seizure medication as a preventative measure. We also offer high dose over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen to minimize physical discomfort and sleep-aids if a client is experiencing insomnia. In some cases we prescribe antipsychotic medications to help alleviate the psychological symptoms of Valium withdrawal, which can include anxiety, depression and hallucinations.
  • Holistic treatment methods – At Guardian Recovery we offer a range of evidence-based holistic treatment methods in order to provide the most integrated care possible. The holistic services we offer include yoga therapy, acupuncture and mindfulness meditation.
  • Intensive therapeutic intervention – At Guardian Recovery we believe that behavioral therapy should be the backbone of every stage of the addiction recovery process, from medical detox through aftercare. We offer individual therapy, group therapy and family therapy for clients to take advantage of if they are feeling up to doing so.
