Guardian IOP — New Brunswick offers treatment for both mental health and substance use disorders. We understand the profound impact these conditions can have on individuals and families as well as the hurdles many encounter while balancing much-needed treatment with personal responsibilities. Our Intensive Outpatient Programs tackle these issues directly.Â

Empowerment
We go beyond typical addiction treatment and mental health care, empowering clients to build essential life skills, foster healthy habits, and develop new coping strategies—all of which enable clients to sidestep triggers, embrace wellness, and regain control of their lives.Â
IOPs for Addiction & Mental Health
Guardian IOPs help clients balance personal, professional, and educational commitments while engaging in mental health or substance use disorder treatment. These programs serve as alternatives to inpatient care or as step-down options after inpatient treatment.
IOP for Substance Use DisordersÂ
Guardian IOP for substance use disorders features a comprehensive, integrated treatment approach that includes a wide range of therapeutic services. Our offerings include group therapy, individual counseling, family therapy, and diverse recovery workshops, along with specialized clinical services tailored to each client’s needs. We also provide Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as needed to reduce cravings and foster relapse prevention.
At its core, our program supports a gradual return to everyday life, with dedicated clinical staff and a compassionate recovery community supporting clients every step of the way. Although we usually suggest starting our IOP after inpatient treatment, direct entry might be suitable for some clients, such as those who have completed medical detox or are beginning their recovery independently.
IOP for Mental Health DisordersÂ
The Guardian IOP for mental health disorders comprises a trifecta of care, featuring outpatient psychiatry services, individual therapy, and nurturing peer support groups. Providing many of the benefits of inpatient treatment in a less restrictive setting, Guardian IOP includes psychiatric assessments as well as highly tailored treatment plans for conditions ranging from anxiety and depression to bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Featuring individualized care provided by experienced, trustworthy, and supportive professionals, Guardian IOP goes above and beyond weekly therapy sessions to provide holistic care featuring medication management as well as individual, group, and family therapy. Our clinical approach includes treatment protocols in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based treatment, and more.
Virtual/In-Person Hybrid
Offering unparalleled flexibility, Guardian’s mental health and substance use disorder IOPs offer a blend of in-person and virtual sessions. Each session is either fully online or entirely in-person, as opposed to having mixed participation mediums within the same session. However, this hybrid option delivers intensive support while affording clients decreased travel time and greater flexibility.
Therapies
Guardian IOP — Hoboken provides individual, group, and family therapy to support individuals in their wellness and recovery journeys.
Individual Therapy
At Guardian IOP, individual therapy is a cornerstone of our treatment, providing a tailored and immersive path to recovery and wellness. Clients work closely with our expert therapists in a private setting, uncovering the root causes of their disorders. This personalized approach fosters effective coping strategies and lasting transformation, resulting in greater self-awareness, resilience, and healthier relationships, all of which support enduring recovery and well-being.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a vital part of our IOPs, offering a nurturing environment where clients can share their experiences under the guidance of a skilled therapist. This supportive space builds a sense of community and empathy, reminding clients they are not alone in their journey.
Family Therapy
Our family therapy acknowledges the profound impact substance use and mental health disorders have on individuals and their loved ones. By involving family members in the process, we help to enhance communication, resolve relationship issues, and provide education about behavioral disorders. This approach strengthens family bonds and fosters a supportive home environment, which is crucial for long-term health and well-being.
Therapeutic Methods
Our methods include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma Therapy, Holistic Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
Clinical Services
Our comprehensive clinical services cover all aspects of addiction and mental health.Â
Case Management
Delivering personalized support and coordination of each client’s treatment plan, our case management services include scheduling therapy sessions, referring clients to additional resources, and ensuring follow-up care. The aim is to provide continuous support, address challenges during treatment, and ensure a structured, well-coordinated path to wellness.
Dual Diagnosis
Tailored for individuals facing the complexities of co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, dual diagnosis care (aka co-occurring disorder treatment) addresses both conditions concurrently, paving the way for effective long-term recovery.
12-Step Education
Our program immerses clients in the 12-step recovery model, weaving its principles and meetings into the substance use disorder treatment process. This structured approach fosters peer support and community, and offers a solid framework for achieving lasting sobriety.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Combining FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies, Medication-Assisted Treatment for substance use disorders eases withdrawal symptoms, reduces cravings, and lowers the risk of relapse. It’s often employed with opioid and alcohol addictions.
Demographic-Specific Care
Our IOPs offer tailored treatment approaches for specific groups such as veterans, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and executive professionals. We address the unique challenges of these diverse populations, providing inclusive and effective treatment.
Life Skills Training
Life skills training empowers clients with essential tools for a smooth transition back to everyday life. Covering financial management, job search strategies, time management, and self-care, this training prepares clients for successful independent living beyond the treatment environment.
Relapse PreventionÂ
Relapse prevention helps substance use disorder clients identify triggers and develop relapse-prevention strategies. The approach enables clients to spot early warning signs of relapse and to navigate high-risk situations, which can foster long-term sobriety.
Fitness Programs
Tailored to each client’s abilities and interests, our physical activities play a vital role in improving mood, reducing stress, and enhancing overall well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions
Unlike traditional mental health settings where providers work independently, our coordinated care model ensures all your providers—therapists, psychiatrists, and other specialists—work together as a unified team. They talk regularly to discuss your progress, adjust treatment plans, and ensure all aspects of your care are working in harmony. This approach eliminates the common frustration of having to coordinate between different providers or repeat your story multiple times. Many clients tell us this integrated approach helps them feel truly supported and understood for the first time in their treatment journey.
Many people struggle with this question, often waiting until they’re in crisis before seeking help. The truth is, if mental health challenges are impacting your daily life—whether that’s affecting your sleep, relationships, work performance, or overall well-being—it’s worth exploring professional care. You don’t need to be at your breaking point to benefit from treatment. Our initial consultation can help you understand if treatment would be beneficial, and many clients tell us they wish they’d reached out sooner. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
We accept most major insurance plans. Our insurance specialists will verify your benefits before treatment begins and explain exactly what is covered. For those with out-of-pocket expenses or without insurance coverage, we offer flexible alternative payment options. We believe cost shouldn’t be a barrier to receiving quality mental health care and will work with you to find a solution that makes treatment accessible.
Absolutely. Our programs are designed to accommodate clients’ personal, professional, and educational commitments. We offer flexible scheduling—as well as an in-person/virtual hybrid option to ensure clients can maintain their responsibilities while actively participating in treatment.
Our Dual Diagnosis service is specifically tailored for individuals dealing with both substance use and mental health disorders. Based on the interrelated nature of these disorders, we treat these conditions concurrently. Our integrated approach offers enhanced long-term outcomes and a comprehensive path to recovery and wellness.
Our group therapy sessions cover a wide range of topics, such as developing coping strategies for cravings, managing emotions, preventing relapse, practicing effective communication, and building healthy relationships. Experienced therapists facilitate sessions and provide a supportive environment for shared learning and peer support.
Family involvement is a key component of our treatment approach. We offer family therapy sessions that aim to improve communication, address relational issues, and educate family members about substance use and mental health disorders. This approach helps rebuild trust, enhances emotional support, and creates a supportive environment conducive to the client’s recovery.
Our admission process begins with a comprehensive assessment to understand the client’s needs and circumstances. This assessment allows us to tailor a treatment plan to best suit the individual’s needs. It includes evaluating personal history, severity of addiction and/or mental health status, and any specific requirements or preferences.
We adhere to strict confidentiality protocols in compliance with HIPAA regulations. All client information is handled with the utmost discretion, and confidentiality is maintained throughout the treatment process—as well as during the initial call to discuss treatment options. Our staff is trained to uphold these standards, ensuring our clients’ privacy and dignity are always respected.
Yes, we offer Medication-Assisted Treatment as part of our comprehensive care for substance use disorders. MAT is used to ease withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and lower the chance of relapse. It is combined with counseling and behavioral therapies for a practical treatment approach.
Guardian IOP offers ongoing aftercare support to assist clients in maintaining sobriety and mental well-being following formalized treatment. This includes follow-up therapy sessions, access to support groups, and resources for continued personal and professional development. Our aftercare program provides clients with the necessary tools and support for long-term success.
Research consistently shows that virtual treatment can be as effective as in-person care for many individuals. Our virtual program maintains the same evidence-based approaches and quality standards as our in-person services. Some clients actually prefer virtual treatment, finding it easier to engage from the safety and comfort of their own space. We carefully assess each client’s situation to determine if virtual treatment is appropriate and make adjustments as needed.
