Our Program
How We Treat Addiction
For over 20 years, The Plymouth House has helped individuals achieve sobriety and long-term recovery using the 12-Step process. While we operate independently from Alcoholics Anonymous and we treat a wide range of substance use disorders, our experience has consistently demonstrated the profound effectiveness of the 12 Steps in facilitating personal transformation and sustaining recovery.
Our facility, nestled in the serene foothills of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, offers an unparalleled retreat for those seeking to overcome addiction. Our comprehensive approach to recovery is characterized by a multitiered system of care, encompassing medical detoxification, residential treatment, and a partial hospitalization program (PHP) with on-site housing. Each level of care is designed to meet our guests at their specific stage of recovery, providing a seamless continuum of support.
Within the tranquility of our 7-acre campus, which is part of a larger 60-acre expanse of natural beauty, clients are immersed in a healing environment. Our world-class recovery services include individual, group, and family therapy conducted by seasoned professional therapists. To complement the therapeutic process, we offer life skills education, guided meditation and yoga classes, nutrition workshops, and a variety of recreational activities. The peaceful walking trails, the presence of a flowing river, and the abundance of trees on our property contribute to an ideal setting for spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical rejuvenation.
At The Plymouth House, we are committed to providing an environment that not only supports recovery but also fosters personal growth and healing on all levels.
Medical Detox
The Plymouth House offers a comprehensive medical detox program designed to safely and effectively support individuals as they begin their recovery journey. As the first step of treatment, medical detox not only ensures clients are safe and as comfortable as possible during withdrawal but also prepares them for residential care.
Personalized Assessment
Upon arrival, each guest undergoes a thorough medical and psychological evaluation conducted by a team of experienced healthcare professionals. This assessment helps to tailor a detox plan that addresses the specific needs of the individual, taking into account the type, severity, and duration of substance use, any co-occurring mental health disorders, and a host of personal factors.
Medical Supervision
To ensure safety and comfort, medical staff closely monitor clients 24/7. The team includes physicians, nurses, and support staff who specialize in addiction medicine. They monitor vital signs, provide medications and supportive care as needed, and adjustment treatment plans as necessary to mitigate withdrawal symptoms.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
The Plymouth House employs Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) when appropriate, using FDA-approved medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and stabilize physical health. The use of medications is tailored to the individual’s needs and is integrated with holistic therapies to support overall well-being.
Holistic Support
Understanding that recovery encompasses more than just the physical aspect of addiction, The Plymouth House incorporates holistic and therapeutic activities into the detox process. These may include nutrition counseling, yoga, meditation, and other stress-reduction techniques to support the body and mind.
Therapeutic Environment
The facility offers a serene and healing environment conducive to recovery. Comfortable accommodations and tranquil surroundings help individuals focus on their health and well-being. Private and shared rooms are designed to ensure rest and reflection during the detox phase.
Continuous Care Planning
Detox is just the first step in the recovery process. The Plymouth House provides comprehensive planning for continuous care, ensuring a seamless transition into further treatment programs tailored to the individual’s needs. This might include residential treatment, outpatient services, or support groups, with an emphasis on long-term recovery and relapse prevention strategies.
Family Support and Education
Recognizing the crucial role of family and loved ones in the recovery process, The Plymouth House offers education and support services for families. This includes providing information on addiction and recovery, communication strategies, and insights on how to support their loved ones through the recovery journey.

By addressing the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of addiction, the program helps individuals regain their strength and confidence, setting the foundation for a successful recovery journey.
Residential Treatment
Our residential (aka inpatient) care offers a transformative journey toward recovery, providing individuals with a nurturing and structured environment that fosters lasting change. Our specialized treatment program goes beyond traditional approaches by immersing residents in a community designed for healing, with 24-hour supervision ensuring safety and support at every step. Within this secure setting, residents engage in a variety of structured activities and therapy sessions that not only address the root causes of addiction but also build vital coping skills and a robust support network.
One of the standout features of of our care is its holistic approach, integrating individual, group, and family therapy to address the diverse needs of each client. The inclusion of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) (when appropriate) and dual-diagnosis care offer additional support. Beyond therapy, residents participate in workshops, group meetings, and recreational events, all designed to enhance their emotional and physical well-being while promoting a sense of community.
Residential addiction care is particularly beneficial for individuals who need a highly structured environment to maintain sobriety, especially those with a history of relapses or co-occurring mental health conditions.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at The Plymouth House is a structured, intensive treatment option designed for individuals seeking comprehensive support in their recovery journey while maintaining some level of autonomy and connection to their daily lives. This program represents a critical component of The Plymouth House’s continuum of care, offering a level of intensity and support that bridges the gap between residential treatment and outpatient services.
The PHP is tailored for individuals who have completed detoxification and possibly residential treatment but still require a structured therapeutic environment to continue their recovery. The program operates five days a week, with participants engaging in full days of treatment activities and therapy while residing at home or in a supportive sober living environment at The Plymouth House.
Therapeutic Modalities and Treatment Focus
Individual Therapy: Each participant is assigned a primary therapist with whom they meet regularly for personalized therapy sessions. These sessions delve into the underlying causes of addiction, behavioral patterns, and coping strategies for dealing with triggers and stress.
Group Therapy: A cornerstone of the PHP, group therapy sessions facilitate peer support, shared experiences, and the development of interpersonal skills. Topics include relapse prevention, emotional regulation, life skills, and the principles of the 12 Steps.
Family Therapy: Recognizing the role of family dynamics in recovery, the program includes family therapy sessions aimed at healing relationships, improving communication, and establishing a supportive home environment.
Educational Workshops: Participants have access to workshops and seminars covering a wide range of topics, including stress management, nutrition, financial planning, and the science of addiction and recovery.
Holistic and Experiential Therapies
In line with The Plymouth House’s philosophy, the PHP integrates holistic and experiential therapies to support overall well-being. Options include:
Yoga and meditation for stress reduction and mindfulness.
Art and music therapy as outlets for expression and creativity.
Recreational therapy, including outdoor activities, to promote physical health and connection to nature.
Medical and Psychiatric Support
PHP participants also have access to medical care and psychiatric support to address any co-occurring mental health disorders or medical needs. This comprehensive approach ensures that all aspects of the individual’s health are addressed in conjunction with their recovery.
Benefits of the PHP
Flexibility: The PHP allows individuals to engage in an intensive treatment program while still having the freedom to live at home or in a sober living environment.
Continuity of Care: It serves as a step-down from more intensive levels of care, providing a seamless transition in the recovery process.
Community Integration: Participants can start to reintegrate into their community, applying the skills and strategies they learn in real-world settings while still under the support and guidance of the treatment team.
The Plymouth House is committed to providing the highest standard of care, and the PHP is staffed by a team of experienced professionals, including therapists, medical doctors, psychiatrists, and holistic practitioners. The program’s design is based on evidence-based practices and is continually assessed and refined to meet the evolving needs of its participants.
The Plymouth House PHP offers a comprehensive, integrated approach to recovery, blending clinical and medical treatment with holistic and experiential therapies. It empowers individuals to continue their journey of recovery with the support, structure, and tools necessary for long-term success.
12-Step Program
At The Plymouth House, we proudly introduce our guests to the transformative journey of recovery through our bespoke 12-Step program set against the serene backdrop of the White Mountains. Upon arrival, guests are enveloped in the tranquility of our exquisite accommodations, marking the beginning of their journey to healing and self-discovery.
The Journey Begins: Steps 1-3
Our process initiates with the foundational steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Each guest is paired with both a dedicated primary therapist and a 12-Step Contact—which is a seasoned mentor committed to guiding them through the nuances of the 12-Step recovery process.
Step One is an invitation to acknowledge a profound truth: Alone, we are powerless over our addictions. It’s in this vulnerable acknowledgement that we uncover the strength to seek and embrace change.
Step Two ignites a spark of belief in a brighter, hope-filled future. By connecting with a force greater than ourselves—be it the collective spirit of the Alcoholics Anonymous community or a personal spiritual belief—we start to believe in the possibility of transformation.
Step Three is a decisive moment where we commit to leveraging this higher power in our journey toward renewal. Surrendering our self-will, we embark on a new path paved by the principles of the 12 Steps.
Deep Reflection: Steps 4-7
As the program progresses, Steps Four and Five delve into introspection, urging guests to undertake a fearless moral inventory. This process not only reveals the truth of our past actions and their impacts but also clarifies the changes necessary for personal growth.
Step Six challenges us to identify and prepare to release the character defects that hinder our progress, recognizing that some may offer deceptive rewards. Step Seven is about seeking divine assistance to eliminate these impediments, acknowledging that, like our addictions, they are beyond our sole control.
Path to Amendment: Steps 8-9
The journey continues with Step Eight, where we list those we’ve harmed and, drawing from our moral inventory, acknowledge our faults. Step Nine involves making amends, an act that transcends simple apologies, embodying genuine acknowledgment of harm and a committed resolve to change.
Sustaining Change: Steps 10-12
Step Ten emphasizes the importance of continual self-assessment, ensuring that we remain aligned with our values and are quick to address missteps. Step Eleven enriches our spiritual connection through prayer and meditation, fostering a deeper relationship with our guiding higher power.
Finally, Step Twelve signifies a profound transformation, focusing on service to others and the daily application of the principles learned throughout the program. It’s here that we truly begin to embody the qualities of selflessness, integrity, and kindness, eager to support others on their path to recovery.
At The Plymouth House, we are committed to guiding you through each step of this life-changing journey, offering a sanctuary where healing and hope flourish. Welcome to a new chapter of your life, one step at a time.
