Bishop Health thrives because of its people—dedicated professionals who create an environment where clients feel heard, supported, and encouraged in their recovery. This week, we’re highlighting Althea Kellett, a Counselor Assistant whose passion for mental health, eagerness to learn, and genuine care for others make a difference every day.
Althea is often one of the first people clients meet when they begin their journey at Bishop Health. From intake assessments to daily support, she ensures clients feel welcomed, informed, and encouraged. But for Althea, this isn’t just about checking off tasks—it’s about showing up for people in the moments they need it most.
Althea plays a vital role in ensuring that clients feel comfortable and supported from the moment they arrive. Whether answering questions or offering reassurance, she helps create a sense of stability in what can often feel like an uncertain time. It’s important to Althea to make meaningful connections and help clients feel supported.

From Neuroscience to Mental Health Care
Althea’s interest in how the brain influences emotions and behavior led her to pursue a Neuroscience degree at Middlebury College. She has always been intrigued by the ways people navigate stress, adapt to life’s challenges, and work toward healing. Understanding the science behind those processes was something she knew she wanted to explore further.
Eager to gain hands-on experience before continuing her education, she sought out a role where she could see mental health care in action rather than just studying it in theory. That search led her to Bishop Health, where she found an environment that allowed her to apply her scientific background while learning directly from skilled counselors and nurse practitioners.
“I wanted to work in a place where I could really see the impact of treatment on people’s lives,” Althea shared. “Bishop Health gave me that opportunity.”
Seeing Clients Grow Is the Best Part of the Job
For Althea, the most rewarding part of her work is watching clients transform. She meets many of them on their first day of IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) when they often feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or hesitant about treatment.
“People come to us at a low point in their lives,” she explained. “I’m often the first staff member they meet, and watching them progress over 12 weeks of IOP is incredibly rewarding.”
Seeing clients develop coping skills, gain confidence, and rebuild a sense of hope reinforces her passion for mental health care. She doesn’t just witness their growth—she actively supports and encourages it.
“It’s amazing to see the difference between day one and the end of the program,” she said. “That moment when a client realizes they have the tools to move forward—that’s everything.”
Blending Science with Compassion
Althea’s background in neuroscience gives her a unique perspective on mental health and substance use disorders. Althea has a strong grasp of the brain’s role in addiction, recovery, and mental health, but her understanding goes beyond textbooks and research. Personal experience has shaped her perspective just as much—she’s been there for friends and family as they’ve faced their own challenges.
“That’s what really pushes me,” she said. “Mental health care isn’t just about the science. It’s about truly seeing people, meeting them where they are, and giving them the support they need in a way that works for them.”
Her blend of scientific understanding and lived empathy makes her a trusted presence for clients and a valued resource for her team.

A Team That Feels Like Family
While Althea loves working with clients, she’s also deeply grateful for the team at Bishop Health.
“It’s the people,” she said without hesitation. “Our team is full of talented, passionate, and fun individuals who love what they do. We support each other through the tough days and celebrate the wins together. I feel really lucky to work with them.”
The environment at Bishop Health is one where collaboration, humor, and mutual respect create a positive space—for both clients and staff.
“We work hard, but we also know how to laugh and lift each other up,” she said. “That kind of atmosphere makes all the difference in a field like this.”
Beyond Work: Cats, Coffee, and Adventure
When she’s not at Bishop Health, Althea loves spending time outdoors. Hiking is one of her favorite ways to unplug and enjoy nature, whether it’s a quiet trail close to home or a more challenging route with rewarding views. Sailing is another passion—though only when the weather is warm enough to make it enjoyable. And when she’s not exploring the outdoors, you’ll likely find her hunting down the best local coffee shops, always up for trying a new roast or a creative espresso drink.
At home, however, her cats keep her on a strict schedule. They have no patience for late meals or missed cuddle time, making sure she stays on track—whether she’s ready or not. Even with her adventurous spirit, she knows there’s nothing like winding down at home with her favorite pets, keeping her company (and reminding her who’s really in charge).
A Lasting Impact at Bishop Health
For Althea, Bishop Health is a place where she sees lives transform every day. She’s there from the start, greeting clients as they begin their journey, and she gets to witness their progress as they build confidence and develop new skills throughout IOP.
Althea continues to make a difference through her dedication to mental health, eagerness to learn, and appreciation for the strong team around her. And with her future in healthcare ahead, one thing is clear—this is just the beginning.
