My Journey to Guardian.
When I was an adolescent, a social worker played a role in my life, and she was very committed and passionate about what she did. I didn’t always appreciate it at the time, but now I see the value of her presence (even though I didn’t want her around at the time). Her example has helped me to understand that people need to have someone in their corner when they go through difficult times.
As I got older, I realized that I wanted to be that person for others—especially those who are sometimes overlooked and underprivileged. So I was originally interested in working with individuals that were recently incarcerated. However, I have family members who have struggled with addiction, and I’ve seen how widespread mental health issues can be. So I felt that addiction and mental health were two broad areas in which to focus my efforts.
I worked for seven years at another organization that treated substance use and co-occurring disorders, and back then, I was getting a little bit burned out and frustrated that individuals didn’t receive the right resources. Ultimately, I transitioned to Guardian Recovery, where I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of the proper resources and support for clients.
Every member of the staff comes to work everyday to serve at a very high level. We prepare groups, and we put a lot of care and consideration into the material that we bring to our clients. We effectively tailor our programs to the small groups we’re interacting with because we have time to really consider what they need. We’re very much in tune with our case loads and the people that we’re working with.

What I Do
I have a caseload of seven clients that I see one-on-one throughout the week. I also run four or five groups, either in person or virtually. I also work with family members, do some case management, and research new therapies to use with clients.
We have a psychiatrist on staff who manages any medication needs. So I just reach out to them if clients need meds or adjustments to their medication. The process is seamless, and that support allows me to focus on my client’s other needs.
I think the process is very beneficial for our clients because they can speak directly to a medical professional if they have any questions about their meds and Guardian Recovery facilitates any changes with their insurance and pharmacy. They don’t have to deal with any of that.
What Helps Clients Most
Guardian Recovery is very good at creating seamless transitions for clients from one level of care to another. We have a team that helps with that process if a client needs to go to a higher or lower level of care, which I think is really wonderful. You’re never really alone.
In fact, I had a client who started having trouble with their insurance coverage. I realize each situation is different, and this can’t happen all the time. But Guardian Recovery allowed them to continue participating in treatment until the problem got resolved, rather than ending care when the insurance issues arose. That’s not always the case with other facilities. Here, nobody just gets kicked out the door for any reason.
